After Turkey introduced vending machines for stray cats, some seagulls began mimicking cat sounds. The development is confirmed but the full extent and reasons remain unclear. This has attracted public interest and raises questions about animal behavior adaptation.
Seagulls in Turkey have begun imitating cat sounds, a behavior that reportedly started after the country introduced vending machines for stray cats, according to social media reports.
The vending machines for stray cats were installed in a Turkish coastal city to provide food and water, a move aimed at animal welfare. Following this, local residents and social media users observed that some seagulls appeared to mimic the sounds of cats, notably meowing. Experts have not yet confirmed whether this behavior is widespread or a temporary anomaly. The phenomenon was first noted on Reddit, where users shared videos and observations of seagulls making cat-like noises.
Behavioral experts suggest that the seagulls may be responding to the sounds emitted by the vending machines or the cats themselves, possibly as a form of communication or curiosity. There is no indication that the seagulls are intentionally copying the cats for any specific purpose, but the behavior has attracted attention for its unusual nature.
Why It Matters
This development is notable because it highlights how animals can adapt their behaviors in response to human interventions and environmental changes. The imitation of cat sounds by seagulls could indicate a form of vocal learning or social adaptation, raising questions about animal intelligence and communication. For residents and animal welfare advocates, it underscores the complex interactions between urban wildlife and human efforts to support stray animals. The phenomenon also sparks broader curiosity about cross-species behavioral influences.

Background
Turkey has a long-standing tradition of caring for stray animals, with various initiatives such as vending machines for cats and dogs. The recent installation of vending machines for stray cats in a Turkish coastal city was intended to improve animal welfare and reduce street animal suffering. Social media platforms, including Reddit, have circulated videos of seagulls making sounds that resemble cats, with some users suggesting that the birds are mimicking the cats’ vocalizations. Similar behaviors have been observed in other urban environments, but the specific trigger in this case appears linked to the vending machine initiative.
“Seagulls are highly adaptable and capable of vocal learning. It’s possible they are responding to sounds in their environment, especially if those sounds are frequent or novel.”
— Animal behavior expert Dr. Lisa Carter
“I’ve never seen seagulls do this before. It’s strange but fascinating to hear them mimic the cats now.”
— Local resident Mehmet Yilmaz

What Remains Unclear
It remains unclear whether the seagulls’ behavior is widespread or limited to specific individuals. The long-term implications and whether this behavior will persist are also unknown. Researchers have not yet conducted formal studies to confirm the cause or significance of this mimicry.

What’s Next
Researchers and animal behaviorists are expected to observe and document the phenomenon further. Authorities may investigate whether the behavior is affecting the seagulls’ health or ecology. Additional reports from other locations could indicate if this is an isolated incident or part of a broader trend.

Key Questions
Is it common for seagulls to mimic sounds?
While seagulls are known to be adaptable and capable of vocal learning, mimicking sounds like other birds such as parrots is uncommon but not unheard of. This behavior is unusual and noteworthy in urban environments.
Why are the seagulls imitating cat sounds?
It is not yet confirmed why the seagulls are mimicking cat sounds. Possible explanations include response to environmental sounds, curiosity, or social learning from other birds or animals nearby.
Could this behavior impact the seagulls’ health?
There is currently no evidence to suggest that mimicking sounds negatively affects the seagulls’ health. However, further research is needed to understand any ecological or behavioral impacts.
Will this behavior continue or spread?
The future of this behavior remains uncertain. Observations and studies are needed to determine if it persists or spreads to other bird populations.
