Anglian Water has implemented a hose pipe ban in parts of eastern England to address severe drought conditions. The ban restricts outdoor water use and is expected to impact thousands of households. For tips on maintaining your garden during restrictions, see our guide on garden hose reels. The situation remains ongoing, with authorities monitoring rainfall and water levels.
Anglian Water has introduced a hose pipe ban across several counties in eastern England, citing persistent drought conditions and low river and reservoir levels. The restriction, which began immediately, aims to reduce water consumption during a period of prolonged dry weather, affecting thousands of households and businesses. You might also consider installing a garden hose reel to help manage outdoor watering more efficiently.
The hose pipe ban applies to outdoor watering, including gardens, lawns, and allotments, and prohibits the use of sprinklers and hosepipes for washing cars or cleaning outdoor surfaces. According to Anglian Water, the measure is a response to severe drought conditions that have persisted for several months, with rainfall levels significantly below average. The company stated that the ban is necessary to protect water supplies and ensure sufficient water availability during the summer months.
Local authorities and water companies in the affected areas have issued guidance urging residents to reduce water use and adhere to the restrictions. Consider using a garden hose reel to help control outdoor watering efficiently. The ban is expected to remain in place until water levels improve, which officials say depends on upcoming rainfall. Anglian Water has also warned that further restrictions could be introduced if drought conditions worsen.
Impacts of the Hose Pipe Ban on Daily Life
The hose pipe ban highlights the ongoing challenges of water management amid changing climate patterns and prolonged dry spells. For residents, the restrictions mean altering outdoor routines, conserving water, and avoiding penalties for non-compliance. The measure underscores the importance of sustainable water use and preparedness for future droughts, which may become more frequent.

Drought Conditions and Water Management in Eastern England
Over the past year, parts of eastern England, including Norfolk, Suffolk, and Cambridgeshire, have experienced below-average rainfall, leading to declining water levels in reservoirs and rivers. Authorities have previously issued warnings about water scarcity, but the severity of the drought has prompted the implementation of restrictions such as hose pipe bans. Similar measures have been enacted in other parts of the UK during past dry spells, reflecting ongoing climate variability and water resource pressures.
“We are taking these measures to protect our water supplies and ensure we can meet demand during this dry period.”
